Fujica G690BL / Texas Leica - First Impressions
I decided to give the Fujica G690BL (aka the Texas Leica) a go and went on an excursion to Seal Island to try it out! I put a roll of Fuji Reala and a roll of Portra 400 through the camera, and these are my first impressions.

I received this rare roll of Kodak Panatomic-X with a camera I bought a number of years ago and forgot about it while waiting for the right moment to try it out. Having rediscovered it recently I figured the best use for it would be a day trip out to some places that I thought the film might excel in. Enjoy! Leica M6 vs. Contax G2 ft. Portra 800

I've wondered for some time now how different my Contax G2 really is in terms of results from a Leica M6. Today we find out thanks to my mate David who lent me his M6 for this experiment. I shot Portra 800 on both cameras since it seemed like the Leica equivalent film stock haha. This video is fucking awesome
This clown seems to like himself more than anything else he's talking about. The MJU ii was the best little pocket camera ever made. Send him to Australia to sheer sheep!
I have just stumbled across your channel. I am very impressed with your work. I also have a Flextight Scanner and I am going to start using it a lot more than I have been. Thank you for posting.
The Nikonos III is a legend. The 28mm is a water contact lens designed to be used underwater only. All Nikonos water contact lenses have a smaller angle of view than the numerical value of the focal length would suggest.
Where is this place, it photographs very nicely.
Very nice video, the main difference is a CCD (charge coupled device) in this unit, a drum scanner uses a PMT (photo multiplier tube) The dynamic range is massive with a PMT and the oil mount optically eliminates dust and scratches in the base of the film... Odd note, I have had a Rodenstock lens from an analog process camera I used to shoot color seps on, ive used it as a paper weight for ages, it was far too nice to toss out when we trashed the camera... That lens f4-f22 was $20,000 back in the late 70's! Anyway these are nice machines!
Hey, love the song at 8:31! Can i find it somewhere? Also great video, as always.
No one would suggest you’re not able to express your views. However what is remarkable about this piece is all that you leave out - and you do not spend any time on the incredible piece of tech Flexcolor .fff files are (Lab color space, raw Scans), and the incredible sharpening range, noise management at scan (it’s not fixed) the dMax capacity of the scanner etc. etc And etc. And the Fuji comparison - colour space, lens choice, camera settings colour space file type …. And the usefulness of the Fuji in high speed processing. The use of the Imacon can be sorted in about 20 minutes and RUclips references abound. Quite possibly a useful comparison is wet mounting the v850 with your little 343. You need to take 3 exposures of a colour neg - 12-14 stops digital capture (in a single exposure) of a 6 stop piece of film - that doesn’t make sense but again your choice. So - I just don’t get what you’re trying to prove or show here - try scanning and shooting an IT-8 target. Your excercise is simply a reasonable record of not knowing much about either - or - choosing not to explain it. It’s weird. Imacon is not an archaic dinosaur - but both are in the hands of those who don’t know how to use them. Again - not saying that’s you - but you leave so much out how it could be useful for anyone is beyond me.
II have had good experiences with compensating the orange mask of the negatives using an 80b blue filter at camera "scanning". As a result, the RAW files have to be less tortured when compensating. In my opinion, bracketing is not necessary with the wide dynamic range of your camera. Colour negatives are so flat in terms of contrast that one exposure is sufficient. I convert with the Negmaster plugin for Photoshop. I find the results much more balanced in terms of colour, modulation and the highlights are also much better defined. Did you try the highres mode of the GFX to get higher resolution?
I love your reviews and content. It’s no nonsense and thorough!!!
I have had quite a journey with the G2 and Leicas. I first got a Minolta CLE and then later a G2 and then finally bought an M4. As soon as I started using the true Leica body, I was converted. I found that I used the G2 and CLE for photoshoots and such, they are much easier to just point and shoot; but the joy of shooting the Leica was on another level. I mostly used the Leica for pleasure shooting. As time goes on these cameras break. My Leica ended up having a problem with the winder and didn't work, so I put it away and stored it and used the CLE. Then something on the CLE broke and I used the G2, but I then fixed my Leica. Now I have sold my CLE broken body and the G2 and bought another back up M2 body and a new Leica lens. I think my decision was the right one for me now. The G2 is easy, nice, and good for certain things; but the Leica bodies (even the meterless ones) are so much more of a joy to use. I like what you said about learning to use it and such.
Good video, well done.

Great Video man, i love the randomness of the clips 😂 Quick question. Let’s say I’ll buy a mamiya to take with me on my travels around the world; how should I deal with the film rolls and the x-ray at any airport? Should I scan the film everytime before taking a plane so that the negative are safe or what’s the usual procedure for a film photographer? I’ve been only a digital one so far Thanks for you time 🖤
Good lord the hips
Man, this is the camera I had at age 11. The price today is so detached from reality. Good that I still have it in a drawer
Wow, the quality here is more than incredible!
Very cool comparison and great explanation as to your hypothesis regarding specifically green color rendering between the Imacon and Fuji GFX 100S color science.
The only problem with the coolscan is that there are no drivers on Windows 10.
That's funny. I have RZ for something like 10 years and never had any issues.
Apart from the CA, I think the optics are very impressive overall. And you made great use of this fisheye lens as a portrait lens. Very creative.
Can you do double exposure pictures with the instax setup?
Just got mine a couple days ago holy buckets is this thing a lot of fun
Thanks for this honesty
Love the video, love the seals 🌞🌞🌞 In case you ever come to Berlin I am happy to lend you my GM670 🌸💮🏵
honestly isn't the kit plus a macro lens just as expensive as an imacon?
Hi Will, have you tried any folder cameras? Speaking of something travel friendly folders could be a good choice, some of them also has coupled rangefinder. Just shoot my first roll with soviet Iskra, quite cumbersome to use, but I like how compact it is, though I didn't yet get results from lab.
Drum scanning I have used the Hasselblad its shit and nikon I was at university they had everything the drum scan is amazing
Thanks for sharing this adventure Will. I’m struck by the similarities between what I saw in you experience in this video and trips here in Alaska. So far away, and so many commonalities. That camera is interesting, but I agree with you-6x9 isn’t preferable. Great to see you again. Enjoy your upcoming adventure. Cheers!
Hi Will, Justin here! Great video, rb rules! Have you got the rb hand grip?
masayoshi takanka vibes on da boat
I love my copy!
Quality Quality 🤌♥️
I have the Fuji gsw690 iii and I love it, I do agree with the weight being a lil too much especially with a strap, but the overall con is the expensive 8 frames you get, in which most of the time you only enjoy 1 or 2 shots per roll. Still the lifespan and the crisp shots justifies to keep it around.
The shots of the Sentinel around 8.10 are really lekker. I remember shooting a story about 2 divers for Fair Lady magazine, close to the Sentinel, using my Mamiya 645 Pro TL. I got so seasick sitting in the boat waiting for the divers to finish, so I totally understand the dizziness! I was almost to afraid to swop backs 😂
Once again, interesting and lots to learn! Some lovely photos too. Love the diversity in your work. Look forward to the next one! 🥰
Vibey vid sir!!
Fujifilm has nothing to do with Texas and Leica.
Whooah you photographed a floating hat on the boat!! I've always been curious about the GW680... like Fuji really made a 67, 69 AND 68 format?!
That camera's a beast! Lovely shots Will, well done!
I'd originally written a much more eloquent version of this comment but I think it got lost somewhere, These days I mostly use this camera with 35 mm film as a much cheaper version of an X-Pan. It's a little jank but there are some pretty good guides online for how to use it that way. It's pretty fun and a 1x3 format is pretty cool to work with Completely agree about the ergonomics though
great video willy, there were some real bangers!
I agree with you about the portability of the RB over the Fujica for travel. I also found the Fujica rather unwieldy. It’s T-shape, heavy long lens connected to a lighter, wide square body made it difficult to carry, use, and pack. I also agree with you about the aspect ratio. The 6x9 negative always made me think I was looking at an image made on a 35mm camera. I love my 35mm rangefinders and had hoped I could have kept the BL as my only medium format camera, so I would be rangefinder consistent, but it was so slow and cumbersome to focus (both Rf patch and lens focus throw), it didn’t do what I wanted of it. The idea of the camera is a great one. I just wish it’s implementation was better.
I completely hear you on weight vs. balance. I have an Instax Mini back for my RB67 that is incredibly light, and when it's mounted my RB becomes tremendously front-heavy. Great video!
My favorite medium format camera is the Linhof Super Technika IV with the 53mm Biogon and 100mm Planar. It’s a heavy system but very versatile, HOWEVER, having an accurate rangefinder to focus but no parallax correction (it kind of has a manual one on the eyepiece but it’s not the best) makes it so much harder to use…
Do you do something with texture when editing your photos? i always feel like your color landscapes have this very defined but fine grain, that looks nothing like what I get from my film shots. Your photos somehow look like they've been printed on sandpaper (in the best way possible).
I don't do anything special to em! The texture is just the Imacon magic I reckon, nice and sharp to the grain every time haha, glad you enjoy it though!
Dope vid Will💯 surprised to hear that the RB is actually more comfortable than this! And that viewfinder is quite the tunnel🥴 The lens renders beautifully though, Fuji really has some magic to it🤌🏻 and that Reala was the cherry on top man🍒 Enjoy your trip, homes🏕
Cheers AJ! I dunno maybe my stance on the RB is just informed by years of rolling with it haha, but it really does feel much better to me! Glad you enjoyed the Reala!
While fuji fans are excited about the new Reala Ace film sim, this guy is shooting the real deal
Hahah gotta roll with the originals out here!
I have both the GL690 & GM670, and I’m about to sell the GM. I was able to procure a Mamiya 7 for a stupid great price so one has to go and I also have mixed feelings on 6x9; but I like the GL to much to sell it. There are 5 lenses for the system and they are all rangefinder coupled. All but the 100 & 150 need an external viewfinder for composition, but all function great. The 50 is a pain to shoot with its hood on, the 65 (both f8 & f5.6) is a stellar lens all around, the 100 is stupid simple, the 150 is solid but I under use it, and the 180 will make your wrists feel it, but damn if all the lenses don’t produce fantastic results. On repairability: the light certain spring & cable can and will go loose (looks like yours is already loosening) and then break, leading to a situation where you can’t change lenses. I’ve done some light looking here in the states (where I’m located) and I have a few leads. Can’t vouch for Capetown or South Africa as a whole. Good luck with your Capetown Leica!
Ah so awesome that you've got such a great selection of the lenses! Well done on your Mamiya 7 score haha! Thanks for the insight on the light curtain spring and cable, I wondered about it's slow return towards the end there haha. Not being able to change lenses would be less than ideal - I'll be sure to let David know, he lent it to me for this video! I doubt there are dedicated repair folks for them around here as they don't pop up particularly often, but there's a Pentax 67 guy who might have a somewhat informed ability to tinker with dodgy springs and such haha! Thanks so much again for the insights!
